Terrorism, Never Let Fear In!
Heart wrenching news pours into countless living rooms: Paris has been under multiple attack. Being with family, I saw the news at their place. It must be such a devastating ordeal to undergo such terror, no matter where one lives. Let’s pray for the whole world!
Paris indeed is closer to home, hearing calls for war and eradication though, makes me very queasy. No man should take others’ lives nor should we inflict pain or suffering on others. Terrorism is brutal and should stop ASAP, in whatever country (Iran, Iraq, Syria, Nigeria, Yemen, Palestine just to name a few); there is no such thing as “more equal” (George Orwell in ‘Animal Farm’). We are one and should aspire to make sure no country, nor people get to experience such atrocities! Calls for retaliation will not cause peace, moreover the opposite.
To be honest, I have no TV at home, a deliberate choice: Images, words and music gets under my skin in no-time and is hard to shake. Watching the news reports reminded me why I stay away of most media. Feeling deeply for all affected people, we should also be aware that spreading fear is what is intended by the perpetrators. Realizing this, let’s hope more people can transcend their emotions, regain oversight and (learn to) respond more skilfully to violence an fear. Break the cycle of action-reaction.
Centuries of experience teach us that returning violence is never the answer!
Here are a few quotes that help keep the focus on practising peace:
“Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that.
Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that”. – Martin Luther King, Jr.
“Tonight, hold your loved ones and pray or wish for peace;
not only from guns and bombs, but from hatred and fear.
If it is our freedom and joy they seek to destroy,
give them not that victory.
Against the forces of darkness and terror,
love and compassion will always prevail.” – George Takei
“We can never obtain peace in the outer world,
until we make peace with ourselves” – Buddha
